Sorry I didn't catch up on yesterday's posting last night. Adam got called in to work and was gone for about 5 hours, so that sort of threw our plans off and we ended up back at the hospital until about 9:30 last night so he could see Aubrey. By the time we got home I was too pooped to do anything but pump and go to bed. I gave her the 9p.m. bottle feeding, and she only took about 15ml from the bottle. Yet again, she was falling asleep while trying to suck. That's ok--she'll get the hang of it. She had a good night with no problems. She has another eye exam sometime this morning. I'll try bottle feeding her again at noon, but I'll remember not to hold her and rock her right beforehand so she doesn't fall asleep on me. :) Here are some pics from yesterday since y'all didn't get your daily fix:

Ok. So. Isn't it just lovely how things can change so quickly? Aubrey had her eyes checked this morning and it appears that she needs laser surgery to stop the retinopathy. Retinopathy is basically disorganized blood vessel growth, and if it continues to happen unchecked it could ultimately cause blindness. We don't want that. So, little miss has to go to the operating room Thursday (don't know a time yet) and have an hour or so long procedure to put a stop to it. She has to be back on the breathing machine for the surgery since they will have to sedate her. This means that our going-home date will be pushed to next Monday or Tuesday if all goes well and she comes off the ventilator fine. The nurse practitioner said it's a good idea to go ahead and have the surgery ASAP, because a growth spurt could cause the retinopathy to go past the point where it can be corrected. And I mean really, we've been in the NICU 115 days...what's a few more?
Aubrey did pretty well with her bottle at noon--she took about 30ml (full feeding is 55) before getting worn out. She then took a nice long nap in what looked like a very uncomfortable position, but it didn't seem to bother her.

Aubrey was nice and awake for her bottle at 6p.m. I had just changed two diapers...she filled the clean one up before I could get it on her good. She took about 30ml from the bottle again, and no gagging this time. The nurse had just started her tube feeding and stepped out when I noticed what looked like milk coming from her nose...she hadn't gagged or choked, so I wasn't sure what was happening. Then, all of a sudden, the end of the tubed came sliding out of her nose! Oops! It just slid right through the tape that had become un-sticky, and formula started dripping everywhere. We had to call another nurse over and she got it back in (with much squirming and what passes as crying for Aubrey). This does not bode well for us if we have to replace her tube at home--she does not appreciate it.
no lines on her sweet face...but only until the feeding tube got put back in. |
