It appears that the feisty one saves her episodes for her mama to see. She didn't have one night before last, or last night, but had one while I was there with her yesterday. If she doesn't want me to come, all she has to do is say. No need to go into an episode about it. ;) Anyway, she had a good night. Weighs 5lb 10oz. I guess we're still just waiting.

I called and forgot to post that her eyes were dilated for the eye doc this morning. Results on that should be next week. Last we heard the retinopathy was in regression.

Spent some time with Aubrey around lunchtime, and she took a good long nap on me. When she woke up, she had 2 almost episodes--she gagged and coughed and her oxygen sats dropped. Her heart rate stayed ok, but you could tell she had a hard time getting stuff swallowed back down, and that's when she doesn't breathe. Poor baby. :( The eye doc that checked her last week said he thought the retinopathy might be in regression; a different one checked her today and said that it now looked like stage 2 in both eyes. *sigh* So, they are going to check her again in a week. A speech therapist is supposed to check on Aubrey sometime today to see how her oral reflexes are--if she can suck on a pacifier/bottle, how she does swallowing and breathing, etc. They want to see if she will be able to suck on a bottle when the time comes.

They were talking about what was going on in the room at the moment. |
Very awake baby. |

Aubrey was a very good girl while we were with her this afternoon. Her sats stayed in the 90s almost the entire time and she was awake and alert for a long time. The therapist had come to work with her; the doctor said Aubrey was "defensive" when she tried to look in her mouth and give her a pacifier. Aubrey? Defensive? Noooooo. Mom was there and said Aubrey swatted at the therapist with her little hands...she's been doing that to nurses since she was born, so not too surprising. She's going to come back every day during the week to do things that will help her strengthen her muscles and work on her sucking reflex so she'll be ready for a bottle.
As we were getting in the elevator to leave the hospital, a nurse wheeled a new mom and her fat happy two-day-old baby into the elevator with us to take them outside to go home. I think I did pretty good in waiting until they got off the elevator to cry. It still hurts me so much to see all these moms taking their babies home with them after 2 days in the hospital and we've been there 13 weeks with still no coming-home-date in sight. Why? Why didn't we get that simple two days in and home? Why are we still watching Aubrey struggle to do things that should come so easily? I know there are no answers to those questions. I wish there were.
